The power of music and massage - The meaning of complementary therapies in palliative care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Most people at the end of life needpalliative care before death.Pharmacologic relief of symptom is themost common treatment, though thiscauses several side effects. The interestin complementary treatments hasincreased lately and both massage andmusic can affect both physiological andpsychological aspects. The aim of this study was to illustratethe meaning of complementarytreatments in palliative care, with focuson massage and music. The study was performed as asystematic review. It appeared that massage and music mayhave significance in several usage areas, such as symptom relief, relaxation, mood and feelings, spirituality andultimately relatives participation andexperiences. It was also shown thatmusic did not always have any effect, and it may have a negative effect onpatients. The complementary therapies may havea significant meaning in the treatment ofpatients receiving palliative care.Physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects can be affected positively, aswell as help to involve family membersin the treatment of the ill and alleviatetheir symptoms, but unless thetreatments are individualized they mayhave a negative effect on patients.Further research is needed to implementcomplementary treatments in thepalliative care and provide evidence fortheir meaning.
