Is senior housing the new housing shape for 55 +? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Is senior housing the new housing shape for 55 +? Pålsson, B. (2011) Halmstad:Högskolan i Halmstad. This is a candidate thesis in order to highlight the new isolated housing shape for "seniors"which is emerging in society, and also examine how they are perceived by the tenantsthemselves, and to what extent they can be described as "gated communities" or "gatesocieties". The paper is based on earlier researches within the subject, along with qualitativeinterviews with tenants in the 55 + household BoViva in Halmstad. The result indicates that the new form of senior housing can be seen as an affirmation that thetraditional society’s gemeinshaft has been lost together with its close relations, friendship andsafety. Gemeinschaft has therefore become a commodity which can be purchased in the latemodernsociety where gesellschaft’s shallow and calculated relations dominates. The wealthyseniors who are striving for close relations, friendship and safety seems to have found theirplace to be, far away from the busy and loud part of the society. BoViva Halmstad can beseen as a gated community and if this trend continues, Sweden could surely generate severalestablished communities where one can buy safety, friendship and a lifestyle.
