Career experiences – in good times and in bad times (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this investigation is to study how men and women, within the county council of Halland, have perceived their careers or occupation to progress. With this starting point in mind we chose to generate three different inquiries that investigated what obstacles that came in their way, what support they received from their employer as well as if there are any particular differences between men and women’s perceptions of their careers.

We chose to use a qualitative way to gather information by conducting interviews. The chosen selection of people included seven managers working for the county council of Halland, including four women and three men.

Our results conveyed that the respondents experiences of their careers were largely positive and also showed that the path to managerial positions could have various methods. Another outcome was that the respondents had faced both opportunities but also obstacles during their careers. The opportunities arisen were of similar nature, though the obstacles varied from case to case. Furthermore the answers gathered also revealed that the support from partners, managers, and colleges had been of positive nature. Finally the conclusion to be drawn from the investigation was that there are some differences in terms of men’s and women’s perceptions of their careers.
