Can γ-linolenic acid contribute to a healthier condition for patients with atopic dermatitis?

Abstract [en]
This review will focus on the treatment of atopic dermatitis with the fatty acid γ-linolenic acid and how this affects the appearance of the eczema. The review is divided into two parts, one part is a review of scientific articles and the other one is a minor empirical pilot study using products containing γ-linolenic acid. Previous research with mixed results may be caused by misdiagnosis of some patients rather than failure of the fatty acid treatment. Recent articles show that γ-linolenic acid may indicate with positive affects on atopic dermatitis. Therefore, more articles need to reach the public domain and to be discussed. The pilot study resulted in bettered eczema in the test person’s skin, which can contribute with individual conclusions. Further research is acquired to establish general conclusions, but with the recent scientific articles we may be on the right way.
