Does a Student’s Mother Tongue, if other than Swedish, Affect the Learning of English from a Swedish Perspective?

Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to investigate the extent of mother tongue influence amongst students, who belong to the Swedish, Spanish and Bosnian language groups, when they translate sentences into English containing examples of noncount and count nouns. Apart from focusing on these grammatical aspects, a part on motivational aspects that might be reflected in the results attained during the written test will also be included. As regards the students present in this study, they all attend at secondary school where the English language is a core subject and therefore not affected by any programs. What is more, since this study includes foreign students (Spanish and Bosnian), they are asked to translate the sentences handed out first into Swedish and then into English, in order to test what influence the Swedish language executes on them. Also, they are asked to answer a questionnaire regarding the motivation towards the Swedish language first, followed by the motivation towards the English language. The Swedish students are, apart from the translation test, asked to answer the questionnaire about the English language as well. What concerns the results, they are found to be positive as regards the foreign students translation into Swedish, whereas the results collected from all language groups concerning the English translation test, are in general poor. The motivational aspects are found to be related to the results reached through the translation tests only in some cases.
