Abstract [sv]
This master thesis deals with the question what a Managing Director at a small, international firm really does at work. How he/she spend the day and what priorities are made. Comparisons are also made between leadership in small domestic firms and leadership in larger organizations. Further, the authors try to find out how the behaviour of the Director can affect the internationalization and growth of the firm. The study is performed by structured observation of two Managing Directors of two small, international firms in Sweden. The empirical collection was made during 3 days at each firm. The authors have found that a leader of a small, international firm act like a leader of a larger corporation. The days are more planned, formal and structured than those of the leader for a small, domestic company. Though the leaders studied here work more with external contacts than the leader of the larger company. Another conclusion is therefore that Directors in small international firms spend more time with strategic plans than the operational issues.
