A Study of Swedish Students’ Mastery of Words and Their Meaning(s)
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2005 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This study aims to investigate Swedish students’ knowledge of words and their different meanings. Since, both secondary school students (A- and B-course) and university students (A-course) take part in this study focus is also on the development from one level to another. Another question that is answered concerns the students’ ordering of the different meanings of the words with multiple meanings. A comparison is conducted with the order in a dictionary and the order in which the students have put the meanings. The students’ use of dictionaries is also considered and compared to their result. The material in the present study consists of the students’ result from a word test containing 48 words all of which are polysemous words. The study shows that the students’ word knowledge is good in general and that a development occurs among the different levels. The students’ ordering of the meanings did not however follow the dictionary’s to a high extent.
