A Study of the Development of English Vocabulary and Grammar among Swedish Beginners of English
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2005 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The present study concerns the development of English vocabulary and grammar among two grade four classes of Swedish nine-year-old beginners at Kyrkskolan and Klockargårdskolan in Halmstad. The methods used are interviews and classroom observations. The term before English was introduced as a subject, a preliminary study was performed where the students were asked about their knowledge of English words. This vocabulary from the preliminary study given as a closed question interview, alongside open questions of vocabulary and tests of various grammar items were used as material in the study. Apart from improved knowledge of the most acquired word classes and grammatical items and how these changed over time the study resulted in some interesting observations. Learner language, for instance chunk learning, guessing and combining parts and whole phrases appeared before English was introduced to these particular students as a school subject.
