When Weird becomes Wyrd: A Comparison of Madness in William Shakespeare's Macbeth and Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters

Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)
Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Some of the characters in Macbeth might be considered mad and follow the structure given in Michel Foucault’s theory concerning “madness of just punishment”. Terry Pratchett’s story Wyrd Sisters is based on this play and the characters considered mad in Macbeth are also mad to some degree in his book. Is it then possible to see that it is the same type of madness that they suffer from? Is the story so much based upon Shakespeare’s that his definition of madness, which according to Foucault ceased to exist in the middle of the 17th century, is treated and described in similar ways? To answer these questions is deconstructed and then compared in the two texts. The conclusion is that the madness does differ, at least to a certain degree. Pratchett’s characters do not entirely suffer from the “madness of just punishment”.
