Preventivlagens uppgång och fall: en analys av riksdagsdebatten 1910-1938.

Abstract [sv]
In the early 20th century, a speech made by Mr. Hinke Bergegren started a protracted debate concerning information, advertising and selling of contraceptives in Sweden, lasting from 1910, when the 'contraceptive-law' came to be, until 1938, when it was abolished. In this essay, the focus is on the actual debate in the Riksdag to find out whether it was a political party debate or an individual debate and also to find out which arguments were used. Therefore the main source has been the Riksdag protocols and contemporary literature such as Myrdals' "Kris i befolkningsfrågan". The conclusion made is that it was a political party debate, with mainly Social Democrats, Communists and Liberals who wanted the law abolished and mainly conservatives who wanted to keep the law as it was. The arguments that were most important to make the change were morality, the growing freedom of women, health and humanity/liberalism.
