Abstract [en]
Human beings have been able to make fabrics colorful with natural pigments since ancient times. The common way to use natural dyes involves several chemicals. In this study we wanted to test methods in natural dyeing that made good fastness to the wool and cotton with as less chemical use as possible, therefore we only used an eco-friendly mordant, alum. The plants, lichens and fir-cones we used is easy to find in our surroundings. We have made test on our dyed fabrics to compare the color fastness due to washings, light exposure and we have also exposed the dyed fabrics to acid and base-baths. To eventually find out which pigment there were in our plants and that maybe participated in the dyeing process, we also made paper-chromatography tests and tests on a spectrophotometer that measures pigment absorbance.
