This report contains a description of the prototype of a frequency converter for on-line measuring in connection with paper printing. This frequency conversion is needed for controlling the measuring process on a rolling paper line during paper-manufacturing and printing. This project was the first step to develop a complete black box unit which converts the frequency of a symmetrical pulse train. A background research on different processor technologies has lead to the conclusion that FPGA’s are suitable for developing this signal processing application. The construction has been made in VHDL and then simulated and implemented on a FPGA on a Spartan IIE-development board. Testing has been done using a signal generator to generate a realistic input stimulus and an oscilloscope to measure the output signal. The frequency converter delivers a converted output signal. The conversion factor is set by eight switches on the Spartan IIE-development board.
