Abstract [en]

The theme of this essay is the crofting community of the Western Islands and the North West Highlands of Scotland, United Kingdom. It examines the process of politicisation of the crofting community as an ethnic minority between the years of 1860 and 1890. This essay covers the topics of the Gaelic Revival, political and social changes on regional and national level, and rural unrest in the crofting regions between 1874 and 1890. The literature sources are changed dramatically during this time. They succeeded in becoming political force whereupon they gained recognition for their cause and retribution for past wrongs committed against them.
