Abstract [sv]
This thesis aims to describe and analyze how knowledge is acquired and disseminated during usability work. The results of the empirical study show that the approach towards usability differs considerably between the companies. Some have a more structured approach while others wage an uphill battle against management and organisational rigidity. The bigger companies with a large percentage of engineers have to work harder to implement user-centered methods than the smaller ones. In general the routes of communication inside and outside the organisation are too long, leading to important knowledge being lost en route. Instead of conveying the usage situation and wishes of the users, usability is communicated through lists with requirements and guidelines. With such an approach the company risks getting stuck at a very basic level of usability. The role of management is substantial but their efforts are often misguided. Facilitating communication and creating a secure environment is the most important task for the top management.
