Abstract [en]
In southern Sweden there is a maternal health care centre were there is a support group for adolescent mothers. The authors have been asked to evaluate this support group. The aim of the paper is to conduct a literature research on adolescent motherhood and to design a study protocol for the evaluation of the support group for teenage mothers. The study protocol is to prepare the evaluation of the support group for adolescent mothers. The method for the evaluation is Focus Group Discussion (FGD). In contrast to group interview, FGD is focusing on the interaction between the participants to generate data and not on the individual opinion. Informants will be chosen from the adolescent mothers participating in the support group. Adolescent mothers were struggling for identity and independence. Common traits among adolescent mothers were feelings of disrespect from authorities. Becoming an adolescent mother brought feelings of being trapped between the world of adults and the one of adolescents. Adolescent mother felt pressure from society related to being a good mother. Young mothers who shared the same experiences might strengthen and help each other. A teenage clinic was preferred before an ordinary clinic as adolescent mothers felt they were looked upon condescendingly by other pregnant women. Adolescent mothers believed that a support group would be appropriate for young mothers. According to the literature review a support group seems to be a great solution to help adolescent mothers cooping with the new situation and upcoming problems. Many studies have reviled that adolescent mothers strengthen each other and that the opportunity to socialize among peers is valuable. Future research of interest is to create frameworks for support groups and include them in the ordinary activities of maternal/child health care centres. The father’s perception of being a parent is also of importance and would be interesting to investigate.
