Abstract [en]
This Bachelor of Science degree project called High speed communication with FPGA started January 2003. It is a FPGA related project that was given out by HMS Industrial Networks AB. This project is a part of a research project that is called FASE- FPGA-based Application-Specific Embedded processing, which is a cooperation between HMS, Innovation Team AB and Halmstad University. The ASIC that is in focus in this project, handles the communication on an industrial network. ASIC technology is expensive to develop for small volumes, and gives no room for reconfigurations. This limits HMS, if they want their products to become adaptable for different customers, do they have to change technology. This is where this project starts. This project main purpose is to evaluate if a FPGA based design is competitive compared with an ASIC. This product may be more flexible because it is changeable after development. A FPGA will also be designed to handle a communication to an industrial network and to communicate with a microprocessor. The results of the design were successful.
