Evaluation of the Biomechanical Effects During and After the Seat Belt Pretensioning Phase

Abstract [en]
The aim of this degree project was to evaluate the biomechanical effects on thorax caused by the seat belt pretensioner and to develop a test method. The pretensioners were deployed in static set-ups with different dummies, geometry and explosive charges of the pretensioners. The dummies that have been used are Hybrid III and the Thor-dummy. The connection between dummies and humans are based on the information from tests performed with Thor-dummy and volunteers. The maximum forces that were measured in Thor and Hybrid III were respectively 3.5 and 3.7 kN. The highest peak force did not always contribute to the highest remaining force. The four sensors showed very different results and the maximum deflection of Thor was in sensor lower right because of the seat belt position. This evaluation has resulted in recommendations for deflection and forces caused by the pretensioner.
