Abstract [en]
This thesis deals with aspects concerining the internationalisation process of companies within a traditional manufacturing industry in a developing country, Malaysia, and to what extent these companies follow the traditional internationalisation models. The theoretical part covers different research fields within internationalisation, as well as relationship and network theory. Traditional internationalisation models, such as the Uppsala Internationalisation model, and more recent research in the field, such as the emergence of "born globals", are presented. The empirical study, which was conducted in Malaysia during March and April 2003, includes 15 Malaysian furniture manufacturers, out of which ten companies participated in in-depth interviews. The studied companies proved to be highly international, most often already from the outset, and they did not follow the traditional steps in the internationalisation process. The main conclusions drawn from this research are that most of the Malaysian furniture companies could be considered "born globals" and that gives new angles to a research that earlier has focused on high-tech ventures and the developed world.
