This bachelor degree project started as a creative idea about the possibility to improve and facilitate parking in garages, partly for the persons parking and partly for the parking company. The persons parking should simply have to drive in, park and then drive out and the payment should come about automatically. The parking company should be able to avoid the risky handling of coins, the time demanding handling of invoice and they would be able to have a better customer foundation. We came up with this idea already during spring of 2001 and it has since partly been developed within other courses. We have developed a small-scale prototype with RFID-technology with well-functioning communication between the RFID units and a PC. To this communication a user interface with a belonging database to administrate the system was developed. This prototype enables the persons parking to drive into and out of the garage without stopping as long as they are registered in the database and has an RFID-tag available in the car. It required that a payment service was developed to give the system the wanted functionality and that we for the reliability of the system for the end customers, the persons parking, developed an acknowledgement service. To be able to handle the new services and the increased demands on the application has great efforts been made to extend and improve the existing system. The payment service means that nothing more is required from the persons parking, than that they have stated information to the database and that they have placed the RFID-tag on an appropriately place in the car. This should make it possible to drive into the garage, park and then drive out and the payment procedure to be automatic. This system should be very useful to parking companies as it diminishes the handling of coins and provides an increased service for the end customers. According to our conclusions the payment procedure should greatly facilitate both the parking company and the persons parking. Unfortunately we have not succeeded in making the payment procedure completely automatic, since the version of external program that we have been allotted is too old. This will be possible to develop with a newer version.
