Bilingual Education: A Study of Students' Accuracy in English in the Bilingual Classroom

Abstract [en]
This study aims to demonstrate that focus on form is an important factor in bilingual education in order to promote language skill in the target language and to give more credibility to bilingual education as a teaching method in Swedish schools. The study is longitudinal with a pre-test in September 2001 and a post-test in May 2002. The subjects are 18 students in a bilingual education class in an upper secondary school where the content subject is history. The aim of the test is to illustrate that students show no or little improvement in language accuracy over time. The result proved the hypothesis to be right and this indicates that it is necessary to incorporate focus on form in the bilingual classroom in order to improve students’ accuracy as well as fluency in the target language. The result of this study should be interpreted with caution because of its limitation in scale. It is a comparatively small study and the results must therefore be seen as more of an indicator of a phenomenon than a scientifically secured result.
