Abstract [sv]
The transition period remains difficult and stressful for new graduates. An abrupt, unsupported change may result in reality shock that can paralyse and undermine the novice nurse and ultimately weaken the profession itself. As new members of the nursing profession, graduate nurses, have a variety of experiences. The purpose of the study was to describe the experiences of new graduates as they enter the workplace. The method of the study was literature study. Four themes were identified: facing the real world, support and teamwork, responsibility, preceptorship. The data indicated that the new graduates experienced that they were taken by surprise related to differences between their ideals and the professional reality. Many new graduates felt inadequately prepared for their new role. A supportive atmosphere improves graduates to adjustment to the employment place. Preceptorship is crucial to help the new graduates adjust to new roles and responsibilities.
