Abstract [sv]
The Swedish grocery market of today has a structure that very much reminds of that of oligopoly, with a few dominant participants. When a market only consists of a few participants this, means lack of competition, resulting in high prices. The aim of the study was to analyze in what way the dominant grocery chains obstruct the competition in the grocery market. It also aims to clarify how a Swedish company can compete against the three dominant participants in the grocery industry. Another aspect of this study is to elucidate the establishment of a Swedish company in a new market. The data collection was made through a profound interview with the manager of establishment at a non-dominating grocery company. To get a closer look at the establishment issue, we also interviewed a civil servant at the municipal government of Halmstad. The result indicates that the entry barriers are few but significant and that the governmental barriers were the highest, which affect the multitude and the prices in the grocery market and leads to great regional differences.
