Student attitudes towards using forum playing as a communicative activity in English language teaching.

2003 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The study aimed at investigating pupils' attitudes towards using forum playing a communicative activity in the English language classroom. Forum playing is a form of role-play that focuses on a specific reality-based theme, and the goal is to analyse all sorts of conflicts by communicating. The forum plays used in this study were designed by Katrin Byréus and Pernilla Tillander, initially inspired by the Brazilian pedagogue and dramatist Augusto Boal's forum theatre. The background to this method and the concept of role-playing is presented in this essay, as well as a thorough description of the process of forum playing from start to finish. The pupils participating in the study were first-year- and second-year students all taking the English A-course at an Upper Secondary School in Båstad. After having participated in two different forum plays with two different themes, leadership and friendship, the pupils were asked to make an evaluation by answering a questionnaire. The main findings showed that the pupils' attitude were positive towards using forum playing when practising communication in foreign language. The pupils felt that they got the opportunity to use the language and that they experienced an increased confidence when speaking in front of others.
