Goethe or Gennäs? Teachers' attitudes towards literature selections at upper secondary school, from a reading promoting perspective
Halmstad University, School of Teacher Education (LUT).
2003 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The purposes of the mother tongue teaching at the Swedish upper secondary school have been altered. In the syllabus, the emphasis on the text-centred literature teaching whish was dominant during the first half of the 20th century, has been replaced by the demand to take students subjective needs into consideration. The goal is to make students to accustomed readers which in turn will improve their abilities to read, write and lead to personal development. Because of the emphasis on pupil-centred teaching and because of the fact that less stress has been put on the literary canon, the framework fore literature selections should have been altered. On this basis, it is of great interest to find out what texts that actually are included in the literature teaching at upper secondary school today and to find out what texts that could contribute to the reading encouragement. In this study an attempt has been made to describe mother tongue teachers' attitudes towards reading promoting activities and towards certain literature selections, namely the literary canon and contemporary literary texts respectively.
