Displacing RP: myth or possibility?
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2003 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This essay looks into prestige accent in the UK. RP has for a long time been the most prestigious accent in Britain. However, it has been claimed that a new variety may be taking over Estuary English (EE). A variety of educated southern speech with its roots around the Thames Estuary. The aim of this essay is to investigate if the position of RP is threatened by EE and if this claimed phenomena is starting to show in the media. To do this, I chose to look into the accents of BBC news presenters. The method used is a so called "observation analysis" (randomly recording BBC announcers). The result gave one possible EE speaker and a rather large group of RP or near-RP speakers. The results show that RP still seems to hold quite a strong grip as a prestige accent. If this will change in the future remains to be seen
