Denna uppsats har som övergripande mål att behandla det komplexa och och alltmer uppmärksammade problemet med dataämnets identitet. Denna uppsats behandlar tre grundläggande aspekter av detta problem. För det första, är det frågan om namnet på disciplinen, vilket behandlas från en historisk och lingvistisk utgångspunkt för att ge grundläggande elementer av problemet och dess vidare diskussin.
