J. D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" as a Reflection of the Social Structure of the Postwar Period.
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
My aim is to investigate the novel’s impact on society and see how it criticizes it but I will also show how it fits into that period’s social structure and is a result of it. I will try to find out how strong the forces of power in society rule and decide how people ought to live their lives and how strongly people are influenced by the norms society establishes even if they do not intend to be influenced or claim not to be. I intend to show how hard it is to resist and how much easier life is if one fits into the stereotyped frame that is created by power. What I am going to prove in this essay is that we will all be caught and captured by the claws of society without any chance of escaping.
