Translation of Poems: Different technique used in translating a poem
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This essay discusses four different poems and their translations. Two of them are written in English and translated to Swedish ("To his Coy Mistress" by A. Marwell, translated by E. Blomberg, and "Song" by C. Rosetti, translated by K. Asplund). The other two are Swedish poems written by T. Tranströmer ("Resan" och "Sommarslätt") and translated by R. Fulton. The aim is to explain the obstacles that the translator may encounter when working with poetry, which techniques they have chosen and whether the original poem has given a good translation and did not suffer from any losses, either in meaning or in form. In this essay, previous studies are taken up whether translation just mirrors the original or if it is a creative work of rewriting a text. After discussing the poems and giving the results, this essay ends with the conclusion that translators are able to perform a great work using different techniques and when they consider the source text as the ground and focus on the target text and on conveying the same message to the readers.
