Translation in Strindberg's Giftas: a study of geographical and cultural items
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The aim of the study is to investigate how geographical and cultural items are written in the translated version of the novel Giftas/Married, whether they are translated, or if they have the same name as in the original. The expectations are that cities and places are not translated, because they do not need to be. The spelling is not expected to be changes either, since the novel takes place in Sweden, the reader of the translated version must understand that if the names may seem a little odd, it is because it is in Sweden. Even if the novel is not read in the Swedish language, the characters still live in Sweden. The cultural items, on the other hand, are expected to include some explanation, to make it easier for the non-Swedish reader to understand. In addition, some background information will also be presented, for instance how different types of genres often are translated. In addition, the question whether translation is possible or not, will be discussed, since linguistics have taken up this idea for a long time.
