Inventing Madness: A Feminist Reading of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and Susanna Kaysen's Girl, Interrupted
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
To live as young women in patriarchal society almost kills Esther and Susanna. Both girls are trapped in a system that does not let them grow as individuals or as women. As a result of this they become depressed and feel that society does not have anything to offer them. None of them want to be a mother and a wife that stays at home and take care of her husband and children. They want more out of life, they want to be independent and important. They rebel against the attitude to femininity as well as to their narrow as women. Their revolt is seen as abnormal and even dangerous to the people around them. In Their refusal to confirm they are labelled in save and are sent to mental institutions.
