Abstract [sv]

The basic idea behind this essay is to study whether broad political compromises may harm democracy by undemining the public debate. The Swedish pension system was during the 1990s reformed by a broad coalition between five political parties with different political ideologies. The public debate during the 1990s reform of the Swedish pension system has therefore been analysed in the following three newspapers, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Arbetet. Based on different theoritical perspectives and the collected data the conclusions drawn in this assay that broad political compromises may limit the public debate, and therefore decrease citizens possibilities to discern the differences between different political parties and to understand the content of political reforms.
