Fiction in the Classroom: Attitudes to reading and literary instruction in upper secondary school
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Training in literature became a part of the curriculum in Swedish schools by the turn of the last century, and the national curriculum recognises the importance of literature instruction in the syllabus for Swedish as well as other modern languages. Nevertehless, educators hold an ambiguous position regarding literature instruction. This paper seeks to document and analyse the attitudes towards the use of fiction in language teaching at the upper secondary level and discuss why, and how, to incorporate the study of literature meaningfully in language teaching for sixteen-to-nineteen-year-olds.
