Teachers' and pupils' attitude toward English: A study of teaching and learning preferences in two Swedish 15-year-old secondary school classes.
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Secondary school pupils in Sweden studying English are very interesting informants from a second language acquisition research point of view. Their situation is especially fascinating considering the amount of input they receive from the media in proportion to the input received during English lessons. The English language permeates the flow of information in Swedish media in the form of American music, movies and sitcoms and we must expect this to affect the pupils in secondary schools. The aim of this study is to compare attitudes toward the English language between teachers and pupils in two ninth grade classes. The primary focus is put on the informants' views on formal vs. informal teaching and learning. The two classes under investigation are compared and analysed in the light of their teachers' attitudes. The pupils are also questioned about their personal goals in their English studies to get information about the nature of their motivation.
