Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
This study is an investigation of grammatical errors in English compositions written by first-graders at an upper secondary school in Sweden. Twenty compositions are investigated, and the data used are based on o composition task with a given topic. The compositions are short and have an average of 176 words. The grammatical errors are classified according to a system based on a word class framework. The aim of study is to examine the occurrence of grammatical errors learners make in English production. The further aim is to describe error types. The errors are discussed and examples will be given. Some statistics will also be presented. The results shows that the verbs alone account for 48 per cent of all errors. Within this word class, concord between the subject and the verb turned out to be the most difficult area. Problems with nouns and articles, which account for almost 33 per cent of the errors, come in second place. Pronouns and prepositions each account for roughly nine per cent. No errors have been found in remaining word classes.
