Abstract [en]
This essay investigates the portrayal of Europe, the Europeans, Africa and the Africans in Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. Conrad's intentions with Heart of Darkness is somewhat ambivalent, this essay thus strives to pinpoint the core of Conrad's criticism of imperialism. Key terms such as imperialism, colonialism and the Other are put in the finde-siècle's historical- and cultural context to, not only illustrate the current mode of thought, but also to explain the black/white dichotomy. Inclusively the essay deals with the breach between the old, narrow minded imperialism and the development of a new awareness the similarities between the races, rather than the old differences, been highlighted. Although Conrad had not yet himself, learned to appreciate the Other the way he instructed.
