MNCs and democracy: The increasing power of multinational corporations and the future of democracy.
Halmstad University, School of Social and Health Sciences (HOS).
2002 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
The most noticeable part of globalisation is the economic globalisation, which affects the power of national governments and the existence of the nation-state. The main actors in the economic globalisation are MNCs, which hold the economic power to bankrupt most of the worlds nations. There is a risk that this creates a democratic problem since the MNCs use their power to make states compete with each other. The discussion in the essay shows that the affects of powerful MNCs are different depending on which democratic theory it is applied on. The future of democracy and its theories is with consideration to the increasing power of MNCs not doomed nor secured. The future of democracy does not lie in the hands of the MNCs, it lays in the hands of the political elite.
