Abstract [sv]
Nowadays outsourcing is a well-established strategy within the industry. In accordance with the aim of the outsourcing the automotive industry, which this master thesis focuses on, co-operate with suppliers that have to take increased responsibility for product developing, manufacturing and delivering, so called system suppliers. Co-operations like these demand according to Nittmar (2000) intensive communication between Original Equipment Manufacturer (system integrator) and system supplier. In collaborative product development demands have to be communicated between participators. To a large extent demands are communicated through the specification, which in this thesis is treated as an open medium for communication of demands (Nellore et al, 1999). In the co-operation, according to Karlsson et al (1998), sender and receiver experience the communication of demands in different ways that cause problems in the product development process. The problems are not solely solved with increased communication, which is a common measure according to Wynstra & Pierick (2000). Instead participators rather have to comprehend how the communications of demands influence the business relation in collaborative product development. To identify, by system integrator and system supplier experienced, differences and similarities in the communication of demands and identify how these affect the business relation, we have studied two cases of co-operation between system integrator and system supplier. The study has been carried out in mix of collecting empiric and studying theory from previous research. The empiric has been collected by deep interviews of staff in the business relationships. This thesis shows that communication of vague demands create uncertainty and unnecessary discussions in the co-operation. Further the study shows that if the system integrator controls the system supplier’s product development activities in detail, it causes discussions concerning liability in the business relationship. The study also exhibits that organizations attempt to increase their profits while working with product development, affect in which extent the system integrator controls the system supplier’s costs. Finally the study reveals that informal communication of demands affects the business relationship’s changing process in a negative way. By taking the results into consideration, we hope that the prerequisites for future business relationships and the result in collaborative product development with external participators will be improved.
