Abstract [sv]
The aim of the study is construct understanding for the demands, from a behavioural aspect, that influences and have created the individual, to develop to member of the Swedish male national team in European Team Handball. The method was combined, both quantitative and qualitative approaches used. The quantitative (n=50, m=25,4) part consisted of the Psychologicals Skills Inventory for Sports-R5 (PSIS-R5). The senior and the youth national team answered the questionnaire together with an amateur team from the Swedish third division. Twenty national team players in varied age (m=23,5) was studied in the qualitative semistructured interview. The results of the PSIS confirmed that the senior national team had a higher level of psychological skills in comparison to the youth-national team, except for the motivational level. The result from the interviews actualised the complexity with becoming a national player. Among a variety of an environment factored the national players emphasised the importance of supporting parents, good leadership and focus on youth development. The players have succed accentuated the importance to play in early years and to be involved in a variety of sports before specialisation. The result were discussed in light of the tenets of Ecological development model, The process theory to socialization and Socialization in and through sport. The essay should interest and inspire coaches and players to further development. It should also motivate the national players of tomorrow.
