Performance in Speech: Switches in Style and Pronunciation among some native English Speakers
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2000 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
We are all aware of switches of style and pronunciation when the subject or/and the listener changes. However, very few of us can precisely define the exact changes that occur when speakers switch. The aims of the present study are to investigate: * how the pronunciation of words become more casual, even sometimes diverting from standard English to vernacular English * how the pauses in speech (which often occur to give the speaker time to think about what they want to say next) are furnished. For example, does the speaker change his habitual hesitation words when he speaks in a more casual way? * what kind of discourse markers are used in two different levels of speech
