Aspects of Code-switching in Films featuring African American Vernacular English

Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)

Abstract [en]
In a language there are various speech codes. When one switches one’s speech from one code to another to accomodate a change in situation, this is called code-switching. The aim with this study was to establish if African American Vernacular English speakers code-switch, and if so, then how and why. I looked into whether or not ethnicity affected any possible swithces and tried to establish what effect core- and peripheral membership of a social network had on the switching between codes. I also tried to establish if there was a difference in the switches between the different features (grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary). Due to the lack of available AAVE speakers, I decided to conduct a qualitative study based on conversation from three films. I feel the study is of great importance since the way media represent language and ethnicity promotes and reinforces certain ways of thinking, acting and speaking.
