Music as Propaganda in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four
Nilsson, Patrik
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2001 (English)
Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))
Student thesis
Abstract [en]
In George Orwell’s ‘1984’ music is very important, although it is not that obvious. Music is often found in the margin or in the periphery of something larger and more significant in a novel. However, that does not have to be accidental because when music is used as propaganda, the people who are exposed to it are not always aware of it and therein lays the strength of using music as a tool for propaganda. There are several examples of this in ‘1984’, and one of the aims in this essay is to expose where and how propaganda is used on an unknowing crowd of people.
