Abstract [sv]

This essay focuses on the political elite in the new Västra Götalandsregionen and the apprehensions and conceptions of regional territorial identity within this elite. A particularly salient conception found is that a regional identity congruent with Västra Götaland is weak. However, another conception within the elite is that a regional identity of West Sweden is somewhat stronger. The elite also gives their conceptions about the institutionalization of regional identity and the possibilty to construct and create such an identity. One conception found is that the possibility to create a regional identity is closely interlinked with the ability of new region to supply fasilities for the inhabitants. The effectivity and functionality of the region conditions the identities within it. This analysis is guided by the theories about the construktion of territorial identities, mainly nationalism. The conceptions of regional identity within the elite also contrasted with the recent economical and political evolution caused by the Swedish membership in the EU and the internationalizationprocess.
