Gender Control: A Feminist Approach to the Lyrics of Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys
Adolfsson, Marie
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2001 (English)
Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)
Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Music is produced and consumed by adolescents in ways that both strengthen their sense of self, and serve to construct the social world in which their identities operate. It is hard to determine how much of the sex role imagery contained in popular music is perceived by young people. However, there is a close connection between the performers, here Spears and BSB, and the message of their lyrics. Spears’ lyrics give animplicit message of a glorification of beauty and material things while BSB’s lyrics give the latent message of the importence of a world filled with stars, parties and drugs. Both artists perform lyrics with conventional, contrastive and mixed gender roles.
