Abstract [en]

The study deals with discourse markers and questions such as why they have been neglected and why they are so difficult to define. Ten taped recordings including interviews with American Swedes have been listened to, and every discourse marker, noun and verb were noted. The three groups were first dealt with separately and then put together to see which group was the most frequently used by the immigrants. The reason for this was to prove that discourse markers are even more commonly switched than well-known word- classes and therefore also deserve more attention.
