Abstract [en]
A giant gap was created between different groups in the South African society during the years of apartheid. The new government is using affirmative action as a tool in order to redress the wrongs. Affirmative action is, however, only a philosophy and therefore a strong framework, like laws and regulations, is needed to execute the ideas. This report deals with the Employment Equity Act (EEA), the part of the framework that concerns the companies and their handlings with their employees. Six companies, have been interviewed. The economical aspect seemed to be the most important reason for implementing an Equity plan and lack of educated people the highest obstacle in reaching the goals of a workforce that reflects South Africa's population. The EEA often affects the strategy in a company that takes these matters seriously. Those companies also seem to be the ones that have easier implementations and detect the opportunities.
