The French Impact on Louisiana English : A Study of Characteristic Features
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2000 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
My intention with this essay was to take a look at the French influence on the English which is spoken in Louisiana. The goal was to recognise what happens when French speakers acquire English and distinguish the linguistic features that are connected to Frech-English dialects. For this purpose I chose to study Cajun English. I analysed 13 Cajun stories which were found on the internet. The most essential result of the analysis was a tendency among Cajun English speakers to adopt French syntactic structures such as producing a long sequence of pronouns in some sentences, but the stories also revealed for instance that the Cajuns have difficulties mastering verb inflections.
