A Qualitative and Quantitative Study of some Slips of the Ear
Halmstad University, School of Humanities (HUM).
2000 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Some slips of the ear can be rather strange and they can really create a humorous effect. Take in consideration, for example, the following slip: ´cause I´m feeling like a criminal -- ´cause I´m feeling like a creeping whore. When one looks at this slip it is hard to imagine how it could have been perceived in that way. However, reasonable explanations can often be provided, even if the slips are as curious as the previous one. Patterns in form of three main categories were found: vowels, consonants and the shape of words. These categories were analysed somewhat further. The frequency of vowel errors and consonant errors showed that the former occurred less frequent and the latter more frequent. These results are reasonable similar to previous research; vowels are often perceived correctly, whereas consonants are not. Slips of the ear are a curious phenomenon worthwhile looking at.
