Abstract [sv]
The purpose of this literature study was to illustrate the patient and nursing perspective on chemical dependency. 22 scientific articles were analyzed and selected to best fulfill the purpose. Chemical dependency has long been viewed as a moral weakness or social problem of lower income environments. Similar to alcoholism it is now defined as an illness with environmental, biological, cultural, and psychosocial factors contributing to its occurance. The more factors an individual encounters the more likely the disorder may occur. The ideology that dependency is life long alarmas many people. This is largely due to their failure to realize that although the disorder is not treatable it is in fact beatable. The recovery of such illness is reliant upon both proper use of prescribed medicine and change in lifestyle. Selfcare, in which a patient is honest and responsible, results in an improved self-awareness and sense of acceptance. Better knowledge among the nursing corps will result in increased understanding and therefore better care may be provided. The 12-step program has proven effective as a means to combat chemical dependency in the USA, however there is no universal treatment. For this reason the program must be tailored to each individual to spark their interest and keep them inspired along their journey to recovery.
