Abstract [sv]
Chronic renal failure implies a permanent deterioration of the kidney function. The life-maintaining treatment is either dialysis or transplantation. To get the diagnosis chronic renal failure involves big changes which influence the quality of life. With this literature study the authors wanted to determine factors influencing the quality of life of patients with chronic renal failure, and people close to them and also what the nurse can do to give as good and individual care as possible. This study showed that stressors were generally the same for all patients. The most frequent way to handle the situation was by the use of problem-focused coping-strategies. Treatment modality turned out to be of great importance to quality of life. Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis generally had a stonger Sense O Coherence (SOC), better chances to attain empowerment, and quality of life than patients in hemodialysis. Quality of life also improved after starting dialysis compared to the predialysis stage. People close to the patients, especially partners, were also influenced by the situation. the study showed a great need for information. Additional research is required to find out more about the influence on the children of these patients and the patients´ need for information.
