Abstract [sv]
My Goal has been to study the democratic deficit of the European Union. I have heard a lot of suggestions of what the democratic deficit actually consist of and the made me interested in this object. The Eurppean Union is a major actor in Europe. Now the European Union has fifteen member states and few citizens feel they can directly influence the EU policy process or even know how to go about exerting such influence. This essay is about the Swedish debate of the democratic deficit of the European Union and in analysis of scientific material from five political scientists. I have used six editorials from three major Swedish daily newspapers. The results of the scientific material are four theses. These are the supranational -, complexity -, negotiation - and identitytheses. Each major newspaper did not reflect all of these theses. The daily newspapers Arbetet and Svenska Dagbladet concentrated on the supranational- and complexity theses and Svenska Dagbladet was the only newspaper that mentioned the identity theses. Dagens Nyheter focused on both complexity and supranational points of view of the democratic deficit and was the only newspaper that mentioned the negotiation thesis.
